Vincent Whitmore passed away on May 10, 2026 after a long and courageous battle with peritoneal cancer. Chief Whitmore gave over 37 years of his life to Fire and Emergency Medical Services in Virginia. In 1971, he was an integral part of establishing the Junior Squad within the Broadway Emergency Squad where he served the department as Captain of the Junior Squad, Training Officer, Lieutenant and Chief of the Department.
Chief Whitmore began his career with the City of Alexandria Fire Department as an Emergency Rescue Technician in 1977 and later achieve the rank of EMS Supervisor in 1982. He was appointed the Director of Emergency Medical Services in 1990, later reclassified to Deputy Fire Chief in 1999 and then Assistant Fire Chief in 2006.
Chief Whitmore believed in the provision of the highest quality prehospital care in Virginia and in service of that belief he served as the President of the Northern Virginia EMS Council and Chaired the Northern Virginia EMS Operations Board and the EMS Committee for the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments.
Vincent leaves behind a loving wife, children, and countless friends who will always remember his patience, kindness, and willingness to help.
The dedicated team at Inova Schar Cancer Center oversaw his treatment and gave him many more enjoyable years than any of us thought possible when he was diagnosed. In honor of his spirit, and their tireless and compassionate care, we are directing that all donations made in his memory be used to support cancer screening, prevention, and research related to occupational cancers in the Fire and EMS services.
