Our three year old daughter, Maria, passed away on June 16, 2025. Diagnosed with Lissencephaly at five months old, Maria was never limited by her challenges but met them with unmatched grace, courage, and persistence. She brought out the best in people, a radiant light eliciting compassion and tender care from everyone who met her. She helped open many eyes to seeing life differently through her presence and experience.
Maria suffered from an unexplained brain injury which led to irreversible swelling. The INOVA PICU worked tirelessly to care for Maria. Dr. Agarwal and the team of nurses and respiratory therapists left no stone unturned. The level of care and compassion our family received was extraordinary.
The Child Life team provided invaluable guidance when explaining Maria's hospitalization to our 6 year old son, William. We were provided with books, memory making, and advice on how to navigate this challenging road as a family.
